Jurgen Klopp’s admiration for Joe Gomez is underlined by his refusal to pursue Matthijs de Ligt, who has just joined Juventus.
Liverpool were the best side defensively in the Premier League and kept the most clean sheets in the Champions League last season.
Yet despite that, many fans wanted to see Matthijs de Ligt join the Reds but he has just been unveiled as a Juventus player after the Serie A giants paid Ajax £67.5m.
Liverpool might have simply avoided pursuing de Ligt due to his price tag given that they spent £75m on Virgil van Dijk last year.
That said, however, it’s far more likely that it has to do with how Jurgen Klopp feels about his current options with Joe Gomez only three years older than de Ligt.
If the Englishman can remain injury-free, there is no doubt that he can one day become the best defender in the Premier League and it seems as though Klopp believes he can reach such lofty heights.
The new Premier League season starts in three weeks and Gomez will be aware that he needs to work his socks off to oust Joel Matip from the starting lineup after the Cameroonian excelled alongside van Dijk last season.
There are five pre-season games remaining before the FA Community Shield showdown with Manchester City which precedes the first game of the Premier League season.
Gomez will need to be at his best to be in with a shout of starting against Norwich at Anfield.
