Divock Origi scored a phenomenal goal against Tranmere Rovers on Thursday evening as he looked to continue proving to fans that he has what it takes to be a top Liverpool striker.
The former Lille striker has not always had the rub of the green but in the last eight months, his luck has seen a significant change and Origi has now won the hearts of fans and perhaps more importantly, Jurgen Klopp’s favour.
His goals last season were hugely important as he almost singlehandedly dragged Liverpool into the final of the Champions League and seems to laced up his scoring boots once more as he opened his pre-season account in fine style.
Joel Matip played an inch-perfect ball over the top of the Tranmere defence and the control from Origi to bring the ball under his control with one touch was world class before he expertly rounded the keeper and slotted the ball into an open net.
Cynical supporters will argue that “it’s only Tranmere Rovers” and while the level of opponent will certainly have played a role in the ease with which the Reds opened up their Merseyside opposition, there is no denying that it was an excellent goal.
It’s all the more notable given that the 24-year-old signed a new contract with Liverpool the day before.
With it looking more and more unlikely that Klopp will splash the cash to sign the likes of Nicolas Pepe or Ousmane Dembele, Origi will need to step up to the plate once more and continue to be the clutch super sub he has proven himself to be.
With Liverpool taking part in seven different competitions this season, the hope is that Origi will be trusted to start from the beginning of games more often which should hopefully see his goal tally increase rapidly.
