Fabinho has amazingly told De Sola that the only Liverpool player to ever tackle the indomitable Virgil van Dijk is Roberto Firmino.

The Dutchman is unquestionably the best defender in the world and is even in line to win the Balon d’Or ahead of football’s greatest ever player Lionel Messi.

He has radicalised the Reds’ defensive game and helped them win their first Champions League trophy in 15 years and such is his stature that he hasn’t been dribbled past in the last year.

Now, in an interview with De Sola, Fabinho has revealed that the only player he has ever seen dispossess van Dijk in Liverpool training is Roberto Firmino.

He said: “I’m usually on his team, thank God. The only guy I’ve ever seen winning a ball from him on training was Firmino. Only once.”

While Mohamed Salah is arguably the more talented player, there has never been a Liverpool signing that has made a greater impact on the club when compared with van Dijk.

Salah scored 44 goals in his first season at the club, breaking a myriad of records along the way but he joined a team that was already a top attacking side.

Van Dijk joined a team that was the worst defensive side in the top six and quickly transformed them into the best in the league and that impact has changed them into a trophy challenging side.

Liverpool are blessed to have both players and there’s no real value in comparing them but it’s still an interesting conversation to have given that there’s no Premier League football for a whole month still!
