The Spaniard’s agent and uncle Julian Llorente told Cadena SER that he had offered him to Liverpool prior to his move to Atletico Madrid but Jurgen Klopp rejected the offer.
The 24-year-old moved across the city to join rivals Atletico from Real but could have joined Liverpool if things had been different.
Llorente is a natural defensive midfielder and was offered to Liverpool by his uncle but Klopp turned down the opportunity because he already has Fabinho, Wijnaldum and Henderson who can all function as a no.6.
Julian Llorente told Cadena SER: “I contacted several clubs to let them know what had happened, the conversation that Zidane and Marcos had.
“One of them was Liverpool, but Marcos’ position was covered and it wasn’t a priority.
“But Atlético are those who perhaps took the strongest step and convinced us. I think we’re right. I hope it’s like that, I hope Marcos does very well.”
Fabinho joined the Merseysiders from AS Monaco last summer in a deal worth £43.7m and has proven to be exactly what was needed at the base of Klopp’s midfield, helping the Reds win the Champions League in his first season at the club.
He took a few months to adjust to Liverpool’s style of play but now that he has acclimatised to the intense system employed at Anfield, he is well on his way to becoming world class.
While it took Liverpool nine years to replace Javier Mascherano, when they finally did, it propelled them back to the top of the European game.
