Lyon forward Maxwel Cornet has commented on the possibility of a switch to Liverpool, telling beIN Sports that he is flattered by the links.
The 22-year-old has been linked with a summer move to Anfield by sources such as the Liverpool Echo but he’s not the player the Reds should be interested in signing from Ligue 1, or even Lyon.
Nicolas Pepe should be the priority for Liverpool but will likely cost too much to sign.
Cornet told beIN Sports: “I did not say I wanted to leave. We met the president [Jean-Michel Aulas] in January, and I said I wanted to extend [my contract], but talks were not successful.
“Liverpool are a big club, any links are flattering. I’m under contract until 2021, but you never know in football so we’ll see.”
The Les Gones striker only scored 12 goals and assisted five last season and would not be an upgrade on Divock Origi at all.
By way of comparison, Nicolas Pepe scored 23 goals and made 11 assists in the same league and although the Ivorian is older and played more games than his compatriot, that doesn’t change the fact that Cornet is not the ideal player for Jurgen Klopp.
