The former Tottenham forward told Sky Sports that he believes that Liverpool could make a surprise move for Matthijs de Ligt.

He said, via the Daily Star:  “They may go out and surprise everybody and go and get de Ligt, Virgil’s Dutch teammate.

“If they can manage to pull that one off and those two can play together, that would be brilliant.”

Liverpool are not expected to sign de Ligt this summer as the young Dutch centre back has received a gigantic wage offer from Paris Saint-Germain that is reportedly worth £340,000 per week.

After a couple of really strong seasons with back to back Champions League appearances, the Reds have made some serious profit but they still cannot afford to pay a single player that much money.

That’s before the 19-year-old’s transfer fee comes into question, making him an unnecessarily expensive transfer.

Jurgen Klopp would also have major concerns about what paying a single player that much might do to the squad harmony that he has worked so hard to foster.

The morale within the squad is far more important than making a marquee signing.
