French football writer Rich Allen told the Blood Red Podcast that Liverpool would be making a mistake in signing Memphis Depay.
He said: “On his day he can be up there with the very best. Some of the skills, movement, passing and finishing he’s got can be marvellous but so often his head disappears or he gets such an inflated ego that he gets frustrated and disappears.
“I think any club going for him has to bear that in mind – that he has to be the number one player in the team, that he has to be loved, adored and pampered – and if I’m Liverpool, I’m not necessarily sure I’d be looking to introduce a character like his into that squad, which has fantastic camaraderie and togetherness.”
Liverpool were reportedly scouting Depay, Tanguy Ndombele and Houssem Aouar at the end of the Ligue 1 season and this has led fans to hope he will become a Red.
As Allen points out though, his character is certainly not suited to being a part of the Liverpool setup.
Some might suggest that Xherdan Shaqiri was a so-called maverick before he joined Liverpool but the Switzerland midfielder has fitted in quite well at Anfield.
Depay is a completely different person, who seems quite arrogant and needs to be the centre of attention at all times which is unlikely given that Klopp has a vast array of top talent at his disposal at Melwood.
The Dutch forward is a player that could potentially cause issues within the dressing room and if Liverpool are worried about that, they should look to avoid making a move.
