Virgil van Dijk’s coach at Groningen Pieter Huistra says the £75m defender has more to his game than Nemanja Vidic did.

He told talkSPORT: “I’m bias anyway, so I would choose Virgil. He has more, he has a little bit more. Vidic, of course, without any doubt was a very good player, he played in a top team.

“In my view, Virgil has everything. He has the flair, he has the technique, he has the passing, he has the defensive leadership, he has the personality that catches people’s eye.

“I just admire the strengths of certain players. There have been very good defenders in the Premier League and when you [van Dijk] are talked about in that group of players then it’s a good honour.”

The Dutchman helped guide Liverpool to its second successive Champions League final this season, beating Spurs to win his first European Cup and first piece of silverware since joining the Reds.

This season has seen van Dijk heralded as the best player in the Premier League and catapulted into talk of winning the Balon d’Or after his efforts in England and in Europe.

Whether or not he wins it, however, is inconsequential as his influence at Liverpool has won him numerous plaudits this season and it seems inevitable that he will taste more success with the Reds.

The Dutchman’s impact extended beyond his defensive duties, with van Dijk registering 13 direct goal contributions this season.
