Sky Sports presenter Kaveh Solhekol claims that Liverpool are set to agree on a contract extension with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The Liverpool midfielder was cruelly struck down by injury last season but he was able to lift the Champions League trophy over 12 months later after being ruled out of last year’s final.
His impact on Jurgen Klopp’s side last season was unexpected as supporters believed that the £35million man was only signed as a squad option but he blew fans away with his pace and power.
He was arguably the most important midfielder on the way to Kiev and had it not been for injury, there is no doubt at all that he’d be an established member of the starting XI now.
Solhekol claims that Liverpool are close to agreeing on a 12-month extension with Chamberlain which would be fantastic news as it would essentially mean he would be given back the year that was stolen from him due to his horrible injury knee.
Liverpool’s decision makers are doing a tremendous job of renewing their most important players’ contracts before they begin to have thoughts about leaving and going elsewhere.
Steven Gerrard revealed in his autobiography, My Story, that FSG not giving him a new contract until it was too late was the main factor behind his decision to leave the club to join LA Galaxy.
By offering Mane, Salah, Chamberlain, Gomez and the like a new deal well in advance of their expiry dates gives Liverpool the power to keep their best players and to ensure they can sell for big money if it comes to it.
Extending Chamberlain’s contract is a brilliant gesture but it’s fantastic business sense.
