John Aldridge told the Irish Independent that he thinks Matthijs de Ligt should be a priority signing for Jurgen Klopp.
He said: “Virgil van Dijk and Matthijs de Ligt have formed a great defensive partnership with the Netherlands and I’m sure they would like to build on that at Liverpool.
“Any player who saw the way Liverpool won the Champions League this season and the incredible scenes on the streets of the city as the team returned home would want a piece of that, and De Ligt is the kind of player that Klopp should be targeting.
“Liverpool should go after him.”
The Dutch central defenders would form one of the best partnerships the Premier League has ever seen and would make Liverpool the favourites to win the title.
That said, the kind of money that de Ligt and his agent are demanding would require Liverpool to break the wage structure that is currently in place and that simply isn’t going to happen.
There is zero chance would make a 19-year-old the highest paid player at the club and it’s even more unlikely that Fenway Sports Group would be onboard with such a decision.
While de Ligt is a player that almost guarantees a decade of success, paying him what he is demanding is simply outrageous given his inexperience and the quality already afforded to Klopp.
Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren make up a very strong quartet of central defenders and should be more than enough for the season ahead.
