Some Liverpool fans have said that signing Matthijs de Ligt is not worth the huge amount of money it would cost to sign him as Joe Gomez is just as good.
The Englishman has a terrible injury record since his £3.5m move to Anfield but, that aside, he is the dream partner for Virgil van Dijk.
Quick, decisive, a strong runner on the ball and able to break the lines with a single pass; Jurgen Klopp is a huge fan of the former Charlton Athletic youngster and it’s clear to see why.
Klopp’s appreciation for Gomez’s talents is evidenced by Liverpool renewing his contract last season, extending his terms until the summer of 2024.
All that needs to happen for the 22-year-old to kick on and become one of the best defenders in Europe is for his injury hassles to become a thing of the past.
If that happens, Liverpool will have saved nearly £60m by not moving for de Ligt and by showing faith in a young, domestic talent in Joe Gomez.
After seeing De Ligt play in the two UCL semi finals and in the Nations League I’m not to bothered about us getting him. No doubt he’ll turn into one of the best CB’s in world football but Gomez also has the potential to be up there if he stays fit so no need to spend that big.

There are some LFC fans who seem to keep forgetting we have Joe Gomez who is a fantastic footballer & who has shown he has the potential to become an outstanding cb…people continuously talking about de Ligt or other options when we have a perfect option right in front of us imo pic.twitter.com/4Kw8MNsQZW

We don’t need De Ligt. Joe Gomez and Matip have proved themselves that they are trustworthy partners for Van Dijk this season, and Lovren is capable as a 4th backup CB.
As much as De Ligt has potential to be world class, Joe has similar potential so it wouldn’t make sense. pic.twitter.com/gqPQpLifj9

I'm not saying this because I'm reactionary but now seems like the perfect time to say this.
Joe Gomez and De Ligt are closer on ability than everyone makes it out to be and Gomez has just as much potential.

Liverpool fans might just be saying they think G0mez is better than de Ligt because it looks increasingly likely that the Dutchman won’t join the club this summer.
Even so, what we saw of Gomez last season, when he and van Dijk conceded just five goals across an 11-game span is hugely encouraging for what the future might hold.
Joel Matip might bar the way forward for Gomez after the Cameroonian enjoyed a stellar 2018/19 season but healthy competition is always welcome among top players.
