Liverpool legend Steve Nicol told ESPN FC that making a summer move to sign Bruno Fernandes would provide Jurgen Klopp with top class talent in midfield.
“I think this would be a decent signing for Liverpool. He would play in the middle of the park,” Nicol told ESPN FC.
“Bruno Fernandes can add to that. Yes, he will get it back but I think he has a little bit more quality in the final third than what they have right now. I think he would be a good addition.
“Liverpool need to get a bigger squad and a bigger squad so that they can give people a break without the standard dropping. I think this could be a hit, I think this could be a good signing.”
Since Coutinho left the club in January last year to join Barcelona, there has been a lack of a creative midfielder in the squad and signing one would allow Liverpool to attack teams in different ways.
Currently, Klopp’s side is over-reliant on Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson’s ability to whip early crosses into the box and if sides are able to stifle those two, Liverpool often look short on ideas.
Signing a top-class attacking midfielder would mean that if Liverpool have to attack down the middle, they will then have the quality to do so but Bruno Fernandes might not be the best player to sign given his huge price tag.
Signing someone like Ziyech would bring the price down dramatically but if Klopp did sign the UEFA Nations League winner, he would certainly bring goals to the Reds’ midfield.
He scored 28 for Sporting Lisbon this season and also provided 14 assists.
Reports from Portugal suggest that Liverpool are the front-runners to sign Fernandes and that submitting a bid would “change everything.”
It would be interesting to see if Klopp would come close to breaking his transfer record again as it might be necessary to do so in order to recruit the Portuguese.
