Jan Vertonghen says that after beating Tottenham in the final of the Champions League, Liverpool deserved to be crowned as the Champions of Europe.
He told BBC Sport: “He’s [Robertson] been unbelievable this season. He’s probably one of the best left-backs in Europe at the moment.
“He played a great final and did so well in the Premier League. All those assists and his overall contribution, he’s a great player.
“It’s not about revenge for me but he played well in the final, Liverpool did well and if you win the Champions League you deserve to win but it will be a different game on Tuesday.”
Liverpool’s celebrations in the 48 hours following the final in Madrid showed how much winning the European Cup for a sixth time meant to the Anfield faithful.
An estimated 750,000 lined the streets on Merseyside to celebrate the club ending the season on a spectacular note.
It is odd, however, that there have been assertions from rival supporters that Jurgen Klopp and his men did not deserve to win the biggest trophy in Europe.
These claims have been made in spite of the fact that Liverpool beat Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Barcelona on their way to the final and then overcame Spurs.
It’s nice to hear Vertonghen credit Liverpool for their sixth European triumph.
