Joel Matip told Matip told Bild am Sonntag that he could return to the Bundesliga when he one day leaves Liverpool but added that he is comfortable with his life on Merseyside.
Asked about a potential return to the Bundesliga, Matip said: “In football nothing is impossible. At the moment I still have two years remaining in my contract here at Liverpool.
“After some problems and injuries at the beginning meanwhile I feel very comfortable here. And I’ve been more mature as a player and as a person here in England.”
The Cameroonian was something of a wild card for Liverpool last season as he came into the side with very little expectation and blew Europe away with his dominant displays at the back.
When Joe Gomez suffered a leg fracture, supporters were dismayed but they soon forgot about the Englishman as Matip settled into the starting XI and forged a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk.
Together the two central defenders won the Champions League and took the first step on the road to being immortalised in the club’s history.
Matip has earned himself a new contract, according to Goal, and it’s safe to say he completely deserves it.
Regardless of who Jurgen Klopp decides should be the first choice partner for Virgil van Dijk next season, Matip will receive his fair share of game time as the Reds will take part in seven tournaments next season.
