Virgil van Dijk told the Liverpool Echo that the decision Matthijs de Ligt will make on his future this summer will be the right one.
He said: “I think Matthijs is a fantastic player and any decision he is going to make will be the right one for him.”
The Dutch stars played alongside each other during their 3-1 UEFA Nations League win over England last night and while de Ligt was at fault for the Three Lions’ only goal, he made up for it with a goal of his own.
The Ajax defender scored the equaliser and made a crucial block on Harry Kane late on to ensure the Netherlands took England to extra time where they scored twice to beat Gareth Southgate’s side.
De Ligt’s future is still up in the air and while it will be resolved at some point this summer, Liverpool fans are growing worried that they might miss out on the Dutchman.
Barcelona are also in to sign him and the longer the saga rumbles on, the more unlikely it is that Liverpool will be the ones to sign him.
Jurgen Klopp will be unlikely to wait around for the young defender as he likes to get his transfers in the door before the start of pre-season to ensure his new players can get a full pre-season programme to aid them in their debut campaign with the club.
De Ligt has shown that he is one to accept a challenge where he can find it so it will be interesting if he moves to the slower, less competitive La Liga to join Barca or if he joins Liverpool in the faster, fiercely fought Premier League.
