Jamie Carragher says that Pierre van Hooijdonk has told him that experts in Holland believe Matthijs de Ligt will one day be better than Virgil van Dijk.
The Liverpool centre-back is hands down the best defender in the world at the moment and has even made a case to be considered as the most in-form player in the world.
The Dutchman has denied that he deserves the Ballon d’Or ahead of Lionel Messi but he’s right up there for sure. As good as van Dijk is, the belief in his homeland is that de Ligt will one day surpass him.
Carragher said: “Pierre van Hooijdonk is next door doing the Dutch TV and I was just having a chat with him before. The feeling in Holland is de Ligt will be better than van Dijk.
“But what I’ve watched of him at Ajax this year and also the speech he gave at the end of Ajax’s season on stage, it was like Van Dijk giving that speech.
“I do feel that young lad is something special. If the Dutch think he is going to be better than [van Dijk], wow what a player he is going to be.”
The London Evening Standard’s David Lynch reported last month that the Dutchman will cost around £61m this summer and if experts in Holland believe he will be better than van Dijk one day, Liverpool must sign him.
Central defenders tend to peak in their thirties so to have van Dijk at the top of his game for the next six or seven years while de Ligt still has over 15 years in him would guarantee Liverpool’s dominance for over a decade.
