Graeme Souness has told the Irish Independent that he believes Sadio Mane and Mo Salah will have their heads turned by Real Madrid.
He said: “Real Madrid and Barcelona will be sniffing round Salah and Mane and I think one of them will be targeted this summer. Both of those clubs are in the process of rebuilding and they tend to tempt any player when they go after them.
“We saw that in the past with Luiz Suarez and Philippe Coutinho and even though they enjoyed playing for Liverpool, their heads were turned when Barcelona wanted them. That will happen again now with Salah and Mane.”
Liverpool won the Champions League last weekend, with Mane and Salah both central to the Reds’ sixth European Cup win and so for Souness to be predicting their summer exits is a bit odd.
Jurgen Klopp has transformed the Merseyside giants from a stepping stone side into the club that players want to take the biggest step in their career with.
Selling Salah and Mane would likely generate well over £300 million but it makes little sense to sell two players that are key to the club’s plans for the foreseeable future.
Finishing on 97 points and winning Ol’ Big Ears was not a fluke and Klopp will be sure to tell his players that they won’t find greener pastures elsewhere.
As Philippe Coutinho learnt the hard way, leaving Liverpool is not a sure fire way to win the biggest trophies in European football but it seems as though staying at Anfield just might be.
With the Reds set to challenge for silverware in seven tournaments next year, it seems likely that Liverpool will win a trophy again.
