Xherdan Shaqiri makes transfer declaration after exit talk

Xherdan Shaqiri told Goal that he will definitely stay at the club despite the same outlet previously reporting he might leave.

He said: “I’m at Liverpool FC, the best club in Europe. The manager has many good options and has to decide who can play.

“I knew before my transfer that the competition here is very tough. I have a long-term contract and I definitely will stay.”

These quotes from Shaqiri will be good news for the majority of supporters as the Switzerland international quickly became a fan favourite this season with his quality from the bench hugely helpful for the Reds.

He cemented himself as one of the Kop’s favourite stars when he scored two goals against Manchester United last October to guide his side to a 3-1 win over their rivals.

Nobody will be more disappointed that he didn’t receive more minutes than the man himself but as Shaqiri told Goal, he was aware that he would face an uphill battle to start regularly.

It’s a sign of the times that a player like Shaqiri is forced to warm the bench when just a few years ago he would have been one of the best players in the squad without question.

Liverpool need to identify similar bargains in the transfer market to further boost the bench ahead of a season where the Reds will play in seven different competitions.
