Xabi Alonso told Liverpoolfc.com that Fabinho’s reading of the game is what makes him such a brilliant midfielder for the Reds.
He said: “I think that he can play everywhere because of his understanding of the game and he is able to read what’s going to happen and how he wants to do it.
“Playing that midfield role, he’s able to connect to the close ones, to the farther ones and I really like the way he plays: his understanding of the game, he’s involved in the game, taking the small decisions but ticking in all of the moments and I think that’s the job of a midfielder.”
The Brazilian joined the Reds just over a year ago for £39million and he has been a breath of fresh air in the holding midfield role.
Jordan Henderson is many things but a world-class no.6 is not one of them and that’s not a criticism of him at all.
Liverpool would not have won the Champions League this season without the protection that Fabinho provides for the back five and his £39m move to Anfield has turned out to be something of a bargain for the Reds.
At 25 years of age, Fabinho is in that sweet spot in his career where his game is becoming more and more mature while still promising much for the future.
The Brazilian has been world class this season and totally deserved to win the Champions League in his debut season with the Reds alongside Alisson, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri.
