Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to express their feelings about links to Lyon forward Maxwel Cornet after he spoke to beIN Sport about a potential move to Anfield.

He said: “I did not say I wanted to leave,. We met the president [Jean-Michel Aulas] in January, and I said I wanted to extend [my contract], but talks were not successful.

“Liverpool are a big club, any links are flattering. I’m under contract until 2021, but you never know in football so we’ll see.”

Liverpool are in the market for a new forward this summer as Jurgen Klopp is set to say goodbye to Daniel Sturridge as his contract expires at the end of June.

Having almost won the Premier League this season, the Reds will need to invest in their side once again to improve their chances of overcoming Manchester City next season.

Liverpool fans, however, don’t think that Maxwel Cornet is the right man for the job.

The Ivorian only scored 12 goals this season and while that might be twice as many as Divock Origi’s tally for Liverpool, the Lyon forward featured for almost 1500 minutes.

Origi appeared for fewer than 600 minutes for Klopp and could easily have scored more had he been given more opportunities.

It will be interesting to see who the German manager does actually sign this summer but hopefully it’s someone with a lot more quality and versatility compared to Cornet and Origi.
