Bayern Munich want to start negotiations to sign Timo Werner, according to AS, which could see Liverpool miss out on signing the RB Leipzig hitman this summer.
The German forward was involved in 28 goals this season and is a hugely exciting no.9 and would be a fantastic player in Jurgen Klopp’s system.
Werner’s pace and intelligent runs would dovetail brilliantly with the Reds’ possession-based style of play but reports from Spain suggest that he most likely won’t be joining the Champions League finalists.
AS reports that Bayern Munich want to open negotiations with RB Leipzig regarding a summer swoop for Werner, whose contract expires in 12 months’ time.
While there is nothing in the report to suggest that Werner will definitely be on his way to Bavaria this summer, there are yet to be anything beyond a few links between Liverpool and the striker.
However, if Klopp is interested in signing Werner and misses out, the best option in the market for the German to turn to is Memphis Depay, who is close friends with Georginio Wijnaldum.
The Dutchman excelled for Lyon this season, scoring and assisting 30 goals in all competitions. His cocky style of play is exactly what is missing from the Reds’ team.
With a front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, it would be difficult to accommodate him regularly in the starting XI but if he is willing to accept a bit-part role, Liverpool would be signing a top, top player with a point to prove.
Depay played for Manchester United between 2015 and 2017 but has been deemed to be a flop for the Red Devils, only scoring five goals in his time in the Premier League.
Signing him to a contract at Anfield could see a Salah-esque narrative unfold.
