If a report from Goal is to be believed and Liverpool are open to selling Xherdan Shaqiri this summer, it could have a significant impact on their transfer plans.
The 27-year-old joined Liverpool almost a year ago for £13million but is at risk of being sold.
The news that the former Bayern Munich man might be sold seemingly came out of nowhere as most fans believe that he is the ideal squad player.
It comes as a surprise more due to the fact that the reason given by Neil Jones is that his sale will come about as a way to generate income to sign Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze.
The promising 20-year-old enjoyed a breakout season with the La Liga giants this year, scoring eight goals and assisting three.
While the Nigerian is undoubtedly talented, signing him is a risk if it means that Shaqiri must be sold as the latter is Premier League proven and almost in his prime.
Chukwueze will only get better but it remains to be seen if he can translate his talent into results for Liverpool whereas Shaqiri has shown that he can make a significant impact when called upon.
Selling Shaqiri would be a huge mistake on Liverpool’s part unless there was a disagreement between him and Klopp which seems unlikely given that the German has recently been singing his praises.
Whatever happens this summer, it’s important that Liverpool don’t damage the progress they’ve made in recent years with silly errors in the transfer market.
