Steve Nicol told ESPN that Liverpool need to sign someone like Matthijs de Ligt because he doesn’t believe that Joe Gomez will get much better.
The 21-year-old is an extremely gifted defender but is supremely unlucky with injuries.
He has suffered five different injuries in the last five years, with three of them keeping him out of action for over 120 days each.
While Nicol might be right that Gomez won’t be a better defender than de Ligt over the course of their careers, it’s simply absurd to suggest that the former won’t improve over the next 7-10 years.
He told ESPN: “I’ll tell you what, de Ligt and van Dijk at any club would be arguably the best centre-back pairing in world football, no question.
“The thing is though, Gomez, before he got injured, was doing an excellent job but I’m not sure that he is going to get any better than he already is, to be honest with you.
“So I think it would serve Liverpool well to go and get somebody beside van Dijk who is tried and trusted.”
The Echo reported this week that Klopp has no interest in pursuing a new centre back and if this is true, Gomez will be the first choice to partner van Dijk in spite of how good Joel Matip has been this season.
Before his injury, Gomez was in the process of forming a truly menacing duo with van Dijk.
If the former Charlton Athletic Academy graduate can avoid suffering injuries that sideline him for weeks on end, he has the potential to be as good as Matthijs de Ligt promises to be.
Steve Nicol’s take on Gomez is quite shocking, to be honest, and offers zero insight or real appreciation of a player that is one of the most promising young defenders in the world.
