Jamie Carragher told the Liverpool Echo that he believes his former side needs to sign several players to improve their squad depth.
The Reds enjoyed their best ever league campaign in terms of points this season by accumulating 97 across 38 games but they just fell short of Man City’s 98.
Jurgen Klopp will now be pondering how best to bounce back next season and Jamie Carragher has shared his thoughts on what’s needed in the transfer market.
He told the Echo: “I think we could do with a defender, a full-back who can play both right-back and left-back.
“We need another attacker on the level of the front three. Not a centre forward. People are saying we need a striker, but I don’t believe that.
“Another [Sadio] Mane type, maybe a bit younger and up and coming. We don’t need a striker because Mane and [Mohamed] Salah can play up front, and [Roberto] Firmino is first choice.”
While Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI is close to perfect, his bench needs to be added to this summer.
Manchester City can often call on Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne from the bench while Liverpool have to rely on Divock Origi for inspiration.
The Belgian might have scored some important goals this season but he’s nowhere near as good as Leroy Sane is.
Having Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita fully fit for the start of next season will certainly see Liverpool have better midfield options from the bench.
Whatever happens, Klopp’s track record in the transfer market is hugely impressive and suggests he will go out and improve his side once again this summer.
