Phil Thompson has told Sky Sports where Liverpool need to strengthen this summer after an incredible season.
The former Red will be impressed with what Jurgen Klopp has achieved this season, having finished second in the Premier League and reaching the Champions League final.
While the final is yet to be played, with Liverpool set to take on Tottenham at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium next month, attention has already turned to the summer transfer window.
Thompson told Sky Sports: “No matter who you are, you have to strengthen while you are on top.
“If Liverpool can, I would look at a creative midfield player and another striker. Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are the three, but it’s a case of getting someone in who will be sitting on the bench for most of the season.
“It is hard to find a decent striker who will sit on the bench and that is the problem Klopp will have. The squad is relatively young which is good and have at least another five years together so we look as though we are in a good position.”
After enjoying its most successful season in years, Liverpool need to ensure that the progress continues by consolidating its place at the top of the European game with a few quality signings.
The mistake a lot of teams make, as Thommo pointed out, is by resting on their laurels and thinking they don’t need to upgrade even though they won silverware or moved up the league table a few places.
The Premier League has evolved to a point where it’s impossible to progress without adding in fresh blood.
Fortunately for Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool now have a really strong spine in their squad and can simply focus on strengthening in a few key areas as well as boosting the bench.
