Gary Lineker told the Times that he believes Liverpool are the big favourites to beat Tottenham in the final of the Champions League next month.
Liverpool might have fallen short in their bid to finish above Manchester City and win the Premier League but they did finish a huge 26 points above Spurs.
This will provide major encouragement to the Liverpool players that will take to the Wanda Metropolitano pitch next month in the Champions League final.
Of course, anything can happen in a final but given that Jurgen Klopp’s side is better than Spurs, if they can employ better tactics than the North Londoners, it will enable them to win their sixth European Cup.
Lineker told the Times: “Overall, team against team, (Liverpool) have got the better players.
“They finished 20-odd points ahead of Tottenham this season so it’s hard to make a case where Tottenham are favourites.
“But, as we know in football, the best teams don’t always win, which is one of the things that makes it so special.”
Liverpool will have Roberto Firmino fit for the final in Madrid which will come as a huge boost because the Brazilian is arguably the most important player to the way Klopp’s side performs.
Without his tireless work up front and high football IQ, Liverpool often look short of ideas in tight areas.
Firmino might not be the player to score the winner in Madrid nor the one to play the decisive pass but he will almost certainly have a crucial role to play in the buildup.
It could be as simple as a run into the channel that opens up space by drawing a centre half out of position but it’s certain that he will play a vitally important role.
