Liverpool are set to offer Divock Origi a new contract, according to the Daily Mail, as Jurgen Klopp is impressed by the way he has taken his chances with the Reds this season.
The Belgian has been clinical for Liverpool this season, scoring a goal every 70 minutes.
That kind of goalscoring form is exactly what you would love to see from a backup striker and the 24-year-old showed against Barcelona that he can do it when included in the starting XI as well.
He might not be the most graceful forward in the Premier League but Origi has proven to Klopp that he has what it takes to make the grade at Liverpool in the toughest of conditions.
The former Lille forward received zero confidence from the wider footballing community ahead of the Barcelona second leg but his tie-winning brace will have changed opinions about his ability to hack it at the highest level.
Dominic King wrote on Twitter last night that Origi is set to be offered a new Liverpool contract after he grabbed the second chance offered to him by Jurgen Klopp with both hands.
From a marginalised squad player to a hero sending his side to the European Cup final in Madrid, Origi has come full circle this season.
I wrote at the start of April that the Belgian must not be sold in the summer and it seems as though he has done enough to secure his future at Liverpool.
Nothing would make Origi’s season more impressive than if he were to score the winner against Spurs in June and win the Champions League for the Reds.
It’s unlikely that his efforts will earn him a permanent starting berth ahead of Roberto Firmino but he’s ensured that Klopp will have second thoughts about leaving him out in the future.
Great stuff, Divock!
