Jurgen Klopp cannot allow sentimentality to get in the way of what will be a crucial transfer window in terms of keeping pace with Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola’s side is set to beat Liverpool to the Premier League title by one point.
It’s a cruel way for the season to end but it doesn’t detract from what has been one of the best Premier League campaigns of all time, with the Reds breaking records along the way.
But just as the 2018 Champions League final defeat didn’t signal the end of Liverpool’s rapid rise to the top, missing out on the Premier League title this year isn’t the end of this side’s mission to win silverware.
It’s only the beginning.
There is so much talent available to Jurgen Klopp at the moment but having said that, there is also a lot of room to improve in terms of personnel.
The news that City are lining up deals to sign Bruno Fernandes and Rodri will be hugely concerning for the decision makers at Anfield as the league leaders already have one of the most stacked squads in existence.
Liverpool can only respond in kind or there is a fear the gap between City and the rest of the league will only grow.
Jurgen Klopp managed the unthinkable and cut the 25 point gap between the two sides to just one but if Pep Guardiola’s side is going to get stronger, so too must Liverpool’s.
Signing a new centre back to partner van Dijk must be the first step but injuries to Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino have highlighted the need to add more quality at the top end of the pitch as well.
There’s no doubt that there is money to be spent but what needs to happen is for Michael Edwards and Jurgen Klopp to ensure their brilliant recruitment continues.
Signing proven quality to add to the starting lineup and bench will hopefully see Liverpool overtake Manchester City next season.
