Jurgen Klopp needs to ensure that James Milner and Joel Matip are both handed contract extensions as the pair are crucial to Liverpool.
The Reds have been in fine form this season, with there still being a ray of hope in their Premier League title bid, as well as reaching the Champions League semi-finals.
There are a number of players that have been crucial to the success that this season has yielded and with Klopp needing to plan and build for the future, it’s important that contract extensions are taken into account.
Two players that should be offered the chance to extend their stay at the club are James Milner and Joel Matip.
The former Manchester City midfielder’s terms with Liverpool expire next summer and Klopp should offer the 33-year-old a new contract for two reasons.
Milner still offers value to the Reds in his squad rotation role and will be able to leave next summer for free if Liverpool don’t renew his terms.
Even if Liverpool can pick up a few million quid for him at the end of next season that would be good business.
One player that absolutely deserves a new contract is Joel Matip. Before the start of this season, the Cameroonian’s Liverpool career was dead in the water.
He was behind Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren in the pecking order but has now placed himself ahead of everyone bar the PFA Player of the Year for 2019.
As much as van Dijk has been the catalyst for Liverpool’s Premier League title bid, Matip has been very good this season, forming a strong partnership with his Dutch teammate.
It will be very surprising if Liverpool don’t offer him new terms after the way he has played this season.
