Virgil van Dijk has won the coveted PFA Player of the Year, according to the Daily Mail, and has beat the likes of Raheem Sterling to the award.

The Dutchman has been phenomenal for Liverpool this season and has been the Reds’ key man in their unprecedented title challenge.

Signed for a whopping £75million, he has reportedly won the PFA Player of the Year award in his first full season at the club.

The official announcement will be made on today but the Daily Mail is reporting that van Dijk has beaten Sadio Mane, Eden Hazard, Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero.

The fact that detractors used his price tag as a stick to beat him with but have since gone quiet highlights just how impressive he has been in the last 16 months.

If you asked supporters you’d probably find most wouldn’t sell him if you offered triple what Liverpool paid Southampton to sign him in January 2018.

If Liverpool win either the Premier League or the Champions League, the decision to sign him will receive the attention it deserves.

While he hasn’t exactly made Liverpool an elite club on his own, it could be argued that the position the Reds are now in would not be possible without him.

His presence at the back has seen Liverpool go from the worst side defensively in the Premier League’s top six to the best in the world in less than a year.

The faith Klopp has placed in him has allowed him to progress the way his talent demanded.

Jordan Henderson has been a fantastic skipper for Liverpool but van Dijk is the future leader of this talented group of players.

He has everything. Pace, strength, a football brain, accurate passing, goalscoring ability and unparalleled leadership qualities.

What a signing he has been. Congrats, Virgil!
