James Milner told the London Evening Standard that Simon Mignolet’s approach to this season has been top class and says the Belgian has the best attitude he’s ever seen.
The former Sunderland goalkeeper has spent a lot of time on the bench this season but has been the model professional, according to James Milner.
“Someone who hasn’t been spoken about much this season – Simon Mignolet,” the vice-captain said.
“Every single day, he pushes himself and pushes Ali and the boys to improve. Nobody will ever speak about him in the press because he’s not on the field, but he’s been so important for us this season.”
Alisson Becker’s £66million move to Liverpool effectively spelt the end for Mignolet.
Since he joined the club, the Belgian has played just twice this season.
And although he wanted to leave last summer, Mignolet has not been making noise to the press about his situation at Liverpool being unfair or speaking about joining a new club.
Instead, he has constantly backed his teammates to win silverware on social media and is often seen on the bench celebrating goals as if he were on the pitch.
It would be fair and quite understandable if he had acted out of anger or frustration by being grumpy on the bench or making snide comments to the media.
When he inevitably leaves the club this summer, the majority of fans will wish him well and recognise that he always gave his best even if his best sometimes fell short of the standards expected at Liverpool.
If Liverpool win silverware this season, he deserves recognition for his great attitude and the role he has played as a senior figure in a relatively young dressing room.
There is just over a month remaining until the end of the season and if the Football Gods are watching over Liverpool, the Reds could end up with a Premier League and Champions League double.
