Jurgen Klopp should sign a world-class centre-back after Joe Gomez struggled with injury once again this season.
At the start of the season, Liverpool conceded just five goals in 11 games. A back five of Alisson, Robertson, van Dijk, Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold was showing its class.
The partnership being formed between van Dijk and Gomez was being tipped to become one of the best in the history of the Premier League.
Then, the former was struck down by injury in December and is yet to feature again this season. He is closing in on a return but questions linger over his long term fitness.
With the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Kalidou Koulibaly tipped to leave Ajax and Napoli respectively, supporters have shown their desire to seen the club sign a new top class central defender.
Gomez has yet to complete a full season without suffering a serious injury. There’s every chance that he can move past his poor injury record but the numbers don’t back this sentiment up.
Since he joined the club in 2015, he’s missed 565 days due to injury. On three occasions he’s been absent for over 120 days.
Klopp cannot afford to gamble the success of next season by going into it with Gomez as van Dijk’s first choice partner.
With several top quality defenders on the market this summer, Liverpool need to act.
Matthijs de Ligt is more than likely set to join Barcelona while Koulibaly has not been linked to the Reds by a reliable source.
Michael Edwards and Jurgen Klopp need to put their heads together and identify the ideal target.
