Manchester United’s David de Gea made a terrible mistake against Barcelona on Tuesday and Liverpool fans immediately had a go at him.
The Spanish goalkeeper allowed a very tame shot from Lionel Messi to spill from underneath his body and into the goal behind him.
It was a mistake that has not been uncharacteristic for de Gea this season. Before the 2018/19 Premier League campaign began, the United shot-stopper was awful at the World Cup in Russia for Spain.
His form this season has not been on the same level it has in the past, with new goalkeepers carrying the mantel forward for English clubs.
Alisson and Ederson, the frontrunners in the race for the Golden Glove, have 17 and 16 clean sheets respectively this term. De Gea, ‘the Premier League’s best goalkeeper’, has just seven.
Of course, he is playing for a poorer defence but it’s the same backline that was in place last season when he recorded 18 clean sheets.
Fans on Twitter have been ruthless, slating the 28-year-old without remorse.

What has happened to de Gea, he saved those exact Coutinho shots from the exact distance in three separate matches against Liverpool🤐

How do I explain to my grandkids that Alisson saved that and De Gea didn't save that? pic.twitter.com/NCxBGGR4Ei

Alisson has definitely been the best goalkeeper in the Premier League this season and has also been the standout keeper in Europe from an English club.
De Gea might have been the best in the league for several years but his influence is waning.
