Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson told the BBC that he thinks beating Porto will give the Reds a big boost in the Premier League.
Goals from Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino mean that the Anfield outfit will travel to Portugal in a week’s time with a valuable two goal lead.
Even more valuable than the lead is the clean sheet which means that if the visitors score a single goal at the Estádio do Dragão, Porto will need to score four to win.
Lawro told BBC Sport: “Liverpool should be able to cruise through the second leg, which will help their Premier League title bid too.
“Manchester City do not have that luxury after losing the first leg of their quarter-final against Tottenham.”
Pep Guardiola’s men were favourites to win at Spurs’ new stadium but a late goal from Heung Min Son gave the Londoners the win.
While this has no direct effect on Liverpool, the Reds will be buzzing after winning for the sixth time in a row and will know a good performance in Portugal next week sees them through to the Champions League semi finals.
City, who have never won the European Cup, will be under pressure to deliver at the Etihad next week but cannot afford to rest players in the Premier League given the pressure from Liverpool.
City’s next Premier League game is against Crystal Palace away and after the London outfit beat them earlier in the season, Roy Hodgson’s players will be right up for the fight.
Of course, Liverpool face Chelsea at Anfield which is hardly an easy game especially given the form that Eden Hazard is in at the moment.
