How Liverpool can exploit expansive Southampton side

Jurgen Klopp told his pre-match press conference that Liverpool’s analysis of Southampton is interesting as they do not play like a team facing relegation.

Liverpool players will travel to St. Mary’s with nothing but three points on their minds. A win will send them back to the top of the Premier League table ahead of City.

Klopp said: “They play football with a clear style. The analysis was very interesting because it doesn’t look like a team who fight for the league [status].

“They look confident, they do what they do and they stick to it. Even the games they lost were rather unlucky.”

Southampton are in good form as they aim to avoid relegation again this season. They’ve won three out of their last five games, including earning themselves a morale-boosting 2-1 win over Spurs.

Hasenhuttl will be looking for more of the same against Liverpool and given the open, expansive game that the Saints have adopted recently, their tactics could play into the visitors’ hands.

Klopp’s teams have always been good at hitting their opponents on the break as he coaches his players to constantly look for space behind or in front of opposition back lines to exploit.

With the pace of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah on the break, Southampton will need to be careful they don’t leave too much space open which could see them punished.

A win would lift Liverpool back above City and ensure that their title hopes remain alive.

City have a tough fixture list ahead of them as they still have an FA Cup semi-final and likely the final too.

They are also in the Champions League quarter finals and so the hope for Reds fans is that they will succumb to fatigue and drop points in the league.
