Liverpool legend Steve Nicol told ESPN FC that Liverpool should sign Spurs centre back Toby Alderweireld to partner Virgil van Dijk.
The Dutchman moved from the South Coast to Merseyside in January last year for a record £75million fee. He has since become the gold standard for defenders across the globe.
“One hundred per cent this guy’s going,” Nicol told ESPN FC of Alderweireld.
“We just don’t know where it is. Again, this is a player who I think most teams in the world would want as their centre-back.
“I wouldn’t mind him at Liverpool alongside Van Dijk, I think that would be a great pairing. So yes, he’s going to leave. Where does he go? I guess it’s up to him.”
The Belgian centre back has a £25million release clause in his deal with Spurs, according to the Telegraph.
Liverpool should seriously consider activating it and, by doing so, would guarantee the Reds that they would have the best central defensive partnership in the Premier League.
It might seem harsh on Joe Gomez to suggest that Liverpool need to sign a new centre back but the Englishman has an awful injury record.
Since joining the club, the former Charlton Athletic man has missed 565 days through injury. While he is extremely talented and more than capable of leading the line at the back with van Dijk, it remains to be seen if he has the fitness to do so.
Signing Alderweireld for a third of the price that it cost Liverpool to sign van Dijk would be extremely good business.
Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards need to be absolutely ruthless if they want to topple Manchester City’s tainted reign at the pinnacle of English football.
By signing established top-class performers, the level of quality at Anfield will only rise.
