Mario Gotze revealed to Sport Bild that he is still in touch with former Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp.
The Liverpool manager gave Gotze his big breakthrough at Dortmund and they have always been close. Even after the 26-year-old moved to BVB’s fierce rivals Bayern Munich, Klopp and Gotze maintained a very close relationship.
Speaking in the latest edition of German magazine Sport Bild, the Dortmund midfielder revealed: “[Klopp] knew that I wanted to leave Bayern [in 2016]. Of course, we talked. He knows me very well and that I am always looking for new challenges.
“I often speak to Klopp. He brought me to the first team when I was 17 and he made it all possible. We never stopped talking.”
Liverpool are in need of a creative midfielder that can both unlock stubborn defences and score from range.
Fans must be getting tired of hearing his name, but Philippe Coutinho’s absence is beginning to have an undesired effect.
With the little magician gone, there has been stagnation in central midfield and Jurgen Klopp has been playing a very safe game centrally.
We wrote yesterday that Naby Keita can be Liverpool’s midfield solution if he can kick on from what has been a disappointing season on an individual note for the Guinean.
Of course, Gotze is an option for Klopp as the World Cup winner is still only 26 years old but his chance to join Liverpool may have passed.
Liverpool wanted to sign Gotze in 2016 but he told Klopp he wanted to see if Dortmund could secure Champions League qualification first and then the Reds signed Sadio Mane.
The Senegal attacker has blossomed while Gotze has meandered and it appears as though Klopp was blessed in being forced to sign Mane.
