In quotes reported by the Mirror, Jose Mourinho said that Porto have an advantage over Liverpool in that Dragons manager Sergio Conceicao will have learnt from their exit at the Reds’ hands last season.
The Portuguese outfit will travel to Anfield next week Tuesday and will look to avoid a repeat of last season’s first leg tie with the Merseysider’s when they were soundly beaten 5-0.
“Porto have a chance to win and go through,” Mourinho told the ANTV Forum.
“Compared with last season, I think Sergio Conceicao will ask himself questions about what happened in order to do something different this time around.
“The tie is open and what happened last year, I believe, can play for Porto in both games.
“Liverpool have absolutely fantastic individual quality, but they are disputing the league title which means that they will not rest players in the previous game or between the two games.”
Last season, Mane scored a hat-trick against Porto and given his electric form at this stage of the season, there is every chance he could do something similarly brilliant to secure a decisive lead ahead of the second leg at the Estádio do Dragão.
For many supporters, the focus this season as been on the Premier League as the Reds’ title challenge is something that hasn’t been seen at Anfield for several years.
The likes of Manchester City are used to challenging every year but Liverpool have been rebuilding since 2010 and are finally where they should be.
Should things pan out perfectly this season, Liverpool could actually end the campaign having won both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.
Of course, the majority of fans would be happy if the Reds won just one to end their trophy drought.
