Anfield legend John Aldridge says that Fabinho is the best midfielder at Liverpool and that it is ‘imperative’ that he starts the remaining games this season.
When the Brazilian came on to replace a flagging Jordan Henderson against Spurs, he changed the game. His composed presence at the base of Liverpool’s midfield allowed Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold to bomb forward without reservation.
Writing in his Liverpool Echo column, Aldridge said: “At the moment, he [Fabinho] is imperative to Liverpool and he’s been excellent for a number of months in midfield.
“I think at this present moment in time, he is absolutely Liverpool’s best midfielder, without a doubt.
“There are a lot of big games between now and the end of the season for Liverpool and I expect Fabinho to feature heavily. At Southampton this Friday, I think Klopp has to start Fabinho too.”
It is very difficult to disagree with Aldo given the impact he has when he plays. Against Spurs, Liverpool were overrun in midfield and the likes of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen were working the Reds over.
Their goal came after Jordan Henderson fouled Harry Kane and failed to prevent him from playing a brilliant quick free kick that cut Liverpool wide open.
When Fabinho was introduced, however, Spurs found it considerably more difficult to break through the midfield.
If Liverpool are to guarantee they aren’t overrun centrally again, Klopp needs to play Fabinho consistently moving forward.
Liverpool face Southampton at St. Mary’s on Friday evening and it is absolutely vital that Klopp starts Fabinho ahead of Henderson. For too long the 28-year-old been offered a starting role purely because he is the captain.
The cruel truth is that Virgil van Dijk is a better captain and Fabinho is a better midfielder.
