Spanish news publication Sport has claimed that the Brazilian midfielder has told his compatriots that he wants to leave Barcelona at the end of the season.
Sport reports that Coutinho said: “I know that it is a difficult decision, but it can be the best thing for my career.”
He left Liverpool in January last season for a Premier League record fee of £142million. Despite securing his dream move, he has struggled this season and apparently wants to cut his losses.
The 17/18 season was brilliant for him, winning La Liga and performing to a high standard. He then went to Russia with Brazil for the World Cup and was arguably their best player ahead of Neymar.
Returning to Liverpool is unlikely but it’s something that I really hope Jurgen Klopp is considering organising. Agreeing a fee with Barcelona should be made easier given the fact that the majority of his potential £142m fee is still outstanding.
Given Roberto Firmino, Fabinho and Alisson’s presence in the dressing room, he would still have that Brazilian foundation in place that made living in Liverpool so enjoyable for him and his family.
Of course, the player would love to make things work in Barcelona and I’m sure his family have enjoyed living in Spain but Coutinho was a loved player at Liverpool and most fans would forgive him if he returned.
In May 2017, Klopp warned Coutinho that if he left, he would be just another player at Barcelona but if he stayed at Liverpool, he would have a statue built in his honour by the end of his career.
I know there is a considerable number of supporters that are vociferously against Coutinho returning but the Brazilian is exactly what is missing from the Reds’ starting XI.
He had 20 goals and assists before January for Liverpool and could have had over double that by the end of the season had he stayed.
Would you be happy if Coutinho returned to Liverpool?
