Jurgen Klopp says “one of the biggest mistakes” he’s made at Liverpool is allowing there to be excessive hype over Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s injury return.
The English midfielder was in superb form during Liverpool’s Champions League journey last season. He was particularly brilliant against Manchester City and scored an iconic goal in front of the Kop.
He was then cruelly cut down by a terrible knee injury but fans have not forgotten what he is capable of.
“How can I say, one of the biggest mistakes I made here was being so excited at having Ox back,” said the Reds boss.
“Not because it is not exciting having Ox back because it is very exciting but the spotlight on the game at Derby in the U23 game was pretty rare.
“Now we keep him a little bit in the shadows; he is in a good moment and will train and when he is back and ready to be properly back then I will inform you.
“Until then I will not speak about Ox.”
I personally don’t think there is much room to allow Chamberlain the chance to make a full injury return this season given what’s at stake.
While he is more than capable of spurring the Reds onto a first Premier League title given his class on and off the ball, after 12 months out, he’s going to be very rusty.
I’m sure Jurgen Klopp will give him a few minutes here and there to get back to match fitness but I doubt he will be handed a starting role with the Reds challenging for the double.
Hopefully he’ll be at peak fitness at the start of next season and can be a major part of Liverpool’s continued push to win silverware.
