Phil Thompson has sent a warning to Virgil van Dijk about Harry Kane ahead of Liverpool’s crunch clash with Spurs on Sunday.
The Reds will host the North London outfit at Anfield this weekend and Phil Thompson believes that van Dijk will need to be at his best to take care of Kane.
“Harry Kane is one of the best strikers in Europe,” Thompson told Sky Sports News. “For a centre-forward, his work rate, he can drop off into that number 10 role, which makes it very difficult.
“Van Dijk will have to be [at his best] and Joel Matip, if it is him at centre-back when he drifts off in those positons, do you stay? If you do go with him you’ve got them runners, Dele Alli or Son who are going to run into the spaces behind you. He makes it very difficult Harry Kane.
“He scores all kinds of goals as we have seen. From inside the box, he can turn and score, great headers and he can score from outside of the box. He’s a very difficult opponent. van Dijk and Matip will both have their work cut out. It’s not just the physical side of it, you have to be mentally tough.”
While I believe that van Dijk and co. need to be wary of Harry Kane, I think the forward will struggle more with getting past the Liverpool defence than vice versa.
The Reds have only conceded 17 goals all season and in order to ensure that Manchester City are kept within sight, this defensive record will need to be maintained.
With a slim one-point lead over City, Liverpool essentially need to be perfect during the final seven games.
Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand over the Reds and will be champions for a second year running if they simply win all their games.
Any points dropped will hand Liverpool the initiative and after throwing away a seven-point advantage earlier this season, Jurgen Klopp’s side will surely not waste another opportunity to go clear of City.
The Anfield outfit has been waiting almost three decades to be named league champions again and this season seems like the best chance to be top dogs once more.
