Spanish football expert Guillem Balague says that Real Madrid wanted to sign Sadio Mane at the end of last season and still hold interest in a future move.
“Let me tell you what I know of that. Basically yes we do know for certain that Zidane wanted Mane to come in the summer,” Balague said on his YouTube channel.
“Conversations took place, as in Real Madrid showed interest in him. But of course Zidane left and that was that. So it was an easy story to recover – and that’s what has happened.
“The story’s out there again but the problem is Liverpool have basically no interest whatsoever in getting rid of Mane.
“There is no buyout clause. There is no way to actually get Mane out of Liverpool.
“So with that in mind, I would say that story is basically dead.”
Liverpool negotiated a new deal for Mane in November last year which means he still has over four years remaining on a contract which has no release clause.
Unless the former Southampton attacker makes a massive fuss like Philippe Coutinho did, he won’t be leaving Anfield anytime soon. For Jurgen Klopp and his plans for the next couple seasons, this is tremendous as he only needs to concentrate on fixing problematic areas of his squad and not replacements for key players.
Mane has been crucial to Liverpool’s title aspirations this season, with the Senegal forward scoring seven goals in his last five games.
If it weren’t for his goals, the Reds would likely be out of both the title race and the Champions League.
With 17 strikes in the Premier League, both Mane and Mohamed Salah are joint-second in the goalscoring charts.
Sergio Aguero has one more and with the title race going down to the wire, City and Liverpool will be looking to outgun each other between now and the 12th of May.
