Louis van Gaal says Liverpool will make it to the final of the Champions League because they are more of a team than Manchester City and Barcelona.
He told BBC Sport: “People think Barcelona are the best but they are not. Manchester City and Liverpool are more of a team than Barcelona – and Liverpool are more of a team than City.
“In my philosophy, the best team shall win but I hope for City because they play the best football.”
Liverpool have been drawn to face Porto in the quarterfinals and after beating the Liga Nos outfit 5-0 on aggregate last season, the Reds will fancy their chances of making a semifinal appearance for the second season running.
The defining difference between this season and last is that Liverpool are in a domestic title race.
Being so heavily involved in both competitions could have an adverse effect on their chances of winning either but with Klopp almost able to choose from a fully fit squad, there’s a good chance the Reds can go all the way in both.
Winning either tournament will make this season a truly memorable one but winning both will see this group of players go down in history as one of the great Liverpool sides.
Of course, if the Reds are unable to win either, it’s encouraging to know that this season isn’t a one-off and that there is more of the same to come over the next few years.
The job Jurgen Klopp has done since arriving in October 2015 is remarkable, taking Liverpool to a number of finals and now the Premier League title race.
Hopefully, the German can win silverware sooner rather than later to get the monkey off his back and make his job going forward that little bit easier.
