Luis Garcia says Sadio Mane has become a more reliable goalscorer for Liverpool and can be counted on to get the Reds over the line this season.
Speaking to the official Liverpool website, Garcia said: “He has been brilliant the whole season, and in these last few games he has been needed because those games were very difficult.
“The opponents were tight at the back and it was difficult to get chances. I think he’s been brilliant, so quick, so good with his feet, the skill that he’s got is fantastic.
“Sometimes in the past he had a few chances and couldn’t score, but now he’s scoring all of them because he is focused.
“He knows that the team needs those goals, and I think it’s brilliant that the team can call on him.”
In his last five games in all club competitions, Mane has scored seven goals and is currently Liverpool’s leading goalscorer. The former Southampton forward has developed hugely since joining the Reds and is carrying his side at the moment.
There’s no doubt that the defensive work Virgil van Dijk is doing is as important to Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge but I do wonder why there aren’t any shouts for Sadio Mane to win the PFA Player of the Year honour.
He has more goals than Raheem Sterling, who is arguably van Dijk’s most impressive contender. The Englishman has scored 15 league goals and has provided 9 assists for teammates but Mane is not far off his performance levels at all.
In an ideal world, the last seven games of the season should impact the outcome of the PFA Player of the Year award but the winner is announced before the end of the season.
It’s a decision that makes little sense as the winner will likely come from one of the two sides challenging for the title and the race looks set to go down to the last day of the season.
