Robert Pires has urged Liverpool to sign Memphis Depay this summer, saying he could follow in Mohamed Salah’s footsteps.
Pires said: “Depay wants to come back to the Premier League and he feels he has unfinished business in England.
“He perhaps feels he wasn’t given a chance to perform and earn the right to stay longer considering he was so young and showed glimpses of undoubted potential.
“Depay might want to return to Manchester United or he might be motivated to prove them wrong by performing for one of their rivals in the Premier League.”
Liverpool are likely to be in the market for a new forward this summer as both Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge are set to leave the club at the end of the season.
Signing Depay would be a tremendous move for the club but he would accept nothing less than a guaranteed starting role which would present an issue of its own.
The Dutchman enjoys a left-sided or central attacking role but Sadio Mane has proved this season that he is as good as any left sided forward in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Roberto Firmino is still an adept striker despite his lack of form this season.
I must say I agree with Roberto Pires on Depay. While he is a former Manchester United player, he would be an excellent addition at Liverpool and does have the potential to follow in Salah’s footsteps.
His current contract only runs until the summer of 2021 so Lyon will need to begin thinking about his future at the club.
Of course, negotiating with Jean-Michel Aulas could prove to be tricky again.
