Raphael Varane is considering leaving Real Madrid this summer, according to L’Equipe, and Liverpool must make a move to sign the Frenchman.
With van Dijk marshalling the troops at the back for Liverpool, the Reds have the best defence in England.
L’Equipe claims that Raphaël Varane is weighing up his options at Real Madrid and ‘has a desire to challenge himself again.’
After van Dijk, I would argue that the Frenchman is the most complete defender in Europe and would be a part of the best central defensive pairing in the world if he joined Liverpool.
Liverpool have struggled with injuries at the back this season, with Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold all spending time on the sidelines at one point or another.
The concern for Jurgen Klopp will be that he needs to find a partner for van Dijk that can match his incredible fitness record. Gomez has been absent for 116* days this season while Varane has only been out for 20.
Of course, the 25-year-old would cost an absolute fortune but given his age, he, alongside van Dijk, would essentially shore up Liverpool’s defence for the next 7 years.
His contract at the Bernabeu expires in 2022 and Jeremy Smith, a French football writer, says he could become the first €100million defender.
