The Dutchman took full responsibility for allowing Fulham to equalise late on through Ryan Babel with comments after the game.
Although James Milner did the same, given that van Dijk hardly ever makes any errors, it was nice to see that the £75million man isn’t one to shirk away from his responsibility as one of the team’s leaders.
Milner’s sliced clearance put him in an awkward position as he was underneath a high ball just inside his own box. He played a rather tame header backwards to Alisson which the Brazilian failed to deal with.
It’s my personal view that Alisson should have come and collected the header but van Dijk has claimed full responsibility.
Ryan Babel was able to score against his former side but I’ve honestly never seen a player look so morose after finding the back of the net.
“It’s one of those situations where you try to head it back. The ball was a little too short and it was a difficult ball to get, and Ryan was good to intercept the ball and score the goal,” van Dijk told Liverpoolfc.com.
“It gave them some belief but obviously that happens sometimes in games. Mistakes are a part of football, you have to take it and I will as well.”
The dramatic win at Fulham sent Liverpool to the top of the Premier League. While City have a game in hand, the Reds will hope they will crumble under the pressure of having to come from behind.
