Jamie Carragher has contradicted what Rio Ferdinand said on BT Sport about Virgil van Dijk and claims the Dutchman can’t be called the best centre back in the world until he wins silverware with Liverpool.

Liverpool progressed to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals for the second year running and van Dijk was excellent alongside Joel Matip in ensuring Robert Lewandowski was limited to one shot on goal.

Earlier this week, Ferdinand said: “He’s the best centre-half around on current form.”

And while Carragher agrees that van Dijk is one of the best central defenders in the world, he added that he is yet to win silverware and so cannot be hailed as the very best in Europe.

“I think he’s a world-class centre-back, there’s no doubt about that,” Carragher told Viasport. “There is talk ‘Is he the best centre-back in the world right now?

“He is yet to win the big trophies like the best players in the world do. You even think of [Raphael] Varane, who won the World Cup in the summer also.

“So of course, he needs those trophies to say ‘I am the best in the world’. But in terms of a centre-back, would me as a Liverpool supporter want any other centre-back in the world playing for Liverpool instead of Van Dijk right now?

“No.”
