Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol argues that Jurgen Klopp must drop Adam Lallana and Fabinho when the Reds travel to the Allianz Arena this evening.

The 57-year-old says Klopp should start Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum against Bayern despite the awful record this midfield combination has in Europe.

Defeats away from home in Europe this season to PSG and Napoli came when this midfield trio was selected while the appalling 2-0 defeat to Red Star in Belgrade came when Milner, Wijnaldum and Lallana were deployed together.

Whatever Klopp does he cannot afford to start any midfield combination other than Henderson, Wijnaldum and Fabinho.

Nicol, however, clearly doesn’t agree.

“No [Lallana should not start],” Nicol said on ESPN FC.

“Do you know what, I’d start [Georginio] Wijnaldum, [Jordan] Henderson and [James] Milner in the middle of the park if all fit and healthy.”

I don’t know how Nicol can watch every single Liverpool game and think that Fabinho isn’t an automatic starter especially with Naby Keita out with a minor injury.

Klopp almost always knows better than me – and most people on Twitter – but if he is of the same thinking as Steve Nicol then Bayern Munich vs. Liverpool could make for painful viewing.
